Automated Optical Inspection & Vision Systems for Quality Control

  • Automated Quality Inspection Systems
    • Automated inspection systems can be provided as standalone or integrated into other automated machines.
      • Often when moving from a manual to an automated process, the operator who once handled and inspected each part (“100% Inspection”, see note below) for quality defects is removed leading to a potential increase in defective product getting through to your customer. This can be prevented by adding an automated inspection system.
      • Automated inspection, though not perfect, can improve toward a true 100% inspection of parts by removing many of the variables associated with manual inspection.
    • Like all the automated systems we provide, each inspection system for quality control is designed with the same principles applied as our automated assembly machines to provide the best use of invested capital.
    • Automated optical inspection, or the use of vision systems for quality inspection, is most often used to automate a manual inspection system, however mechanical gauge blocks or simple position sensors may be used as well to detect defective products.
    • Automated visual inspection can be used to detect color, shape, orientation, surface condition, part present, count, and many other key quality attributes.

* Note: 100% inspection does not guarantee that 100% of the defective product is removed, in fact, if an operator completes 100% visual inspection, then the sorting is only 80% reliable. That means the operator will make a mistake 20% of the time, even with extensive operator training that number could only be reduced to 5%. (Six sigma Daily, January 4, 2013)
